So tomorrow is Trinity Sunday. I’m not sure how many people knew this. Hopefully you’d find out tomorrow when you go to church, but I’m not sure that’s even the case for all parties.
This is largely due to the fact that most people have a hard time with the importance of the Trinity. That’s interesting, because the concept of the Trinity has always been identified as one of the fundamental truths of the faith. Theologians have debated it. Wars have been fought over it. But I think many today would have to ask, “what’s the big deal? How’s my life affected by a deeper understanding of Trinity?”
That’s a good question. Go ahead and read a Trinity text, say John 1:29-34.
Now think about this. A lot of the time people spend talking about Trinity is spent trying to understand what’s going on inside it, who is equal to whom, who is what part of . . ., you get the idea. This is important. It helps us understand God and stay away from errors that can send is in some frightening directions, but just as important, and I think far less thought about is the importance of how the Trinity works in the world You see a lot of the time, including in John 1, God reveals himself as Trinity because that’s how he wants to work in the world, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They always work together, but they each have distinct roles as well. You know there’s something amazing about getting a chance to get into God, to see that he reveals himself to us, and that he even lets us into his workings a little as well. Even God works together. Even God plays as a team. And everything God does, from creation, to salvation, to recreation was done with a plan, a plan that included the whole Trinity.
It can give you a little whoa moment when you really push into God. Amazing, awe-inspiring, God. Let yourself be a little amazed and awed by God every once in a while. Let his nature teach you something about our world too and how we should work in it.
Father, you send your Word to bring us truth and your Spirit to make us holy. Through them we come to know the mystery of your life. Help us to worship you, one God in three persons, by proclaiming and living our faith in you. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and th Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
