    Please Help - QoW

    By John | June 16, 2008

I wanted to share with you this email I received yesterday. The depth of her pain, the honesty of her questions, and the humbleness of her desire to see God working in her life struck me to my core. Knowing that my own counsel is certainly incomplete and with her permission, I wanted to open it up to you all. How do we, as a community, respond in love to this plea? Leave your response below…

I have a question. It is a deep one and one that maybe doesn’t have an answer. But everyone has their own opinion on the subject. And I would appreciate yours if you would not mind.

If Christians commit suicide do they go to Heaven? Especially if they feel that there is no other hope and no other option?

If I knew Christians went to heaven when they committed suicide, I think I would have done it a long time ago. Living with a severe chronic illness like chemical depression and anxiety can be more than one can bear most of the time.

God can heal, God can give Grace, God Can, God Can, God Can.

    But why has God NOT?

He promises not to give a person more than they can handle. But when it becomes extreme and a person just can’t take it anymore, they end their lives to finally get rid of the hell they are going through.

Some people say it is better to have Hell on Earth than Hell in Eternity. That is SO true. However, when a person can’t function or get out of bed on earth, what is the reason for living?

I guess this is more than one question. I said this was deep. Take a deep breath and you can decide if you want to answer this or not.

**sigh** What can we, as the FE community, say to this plea?

My heart breaks for this person. Nobody can say,”I know what you are going through”, but maybe my story will help a little. I am 72 years old now. When I was in my 30’s, I suffered the loss of two brothers in one week-end, and then two other relatives shortly after. One year later, I was in a deep depression. I was so angry with God! I was sure He didn’t measn it when He said He wouldn’t give us more than we could handle. I was ready to give up on him. By His grace, He didn’t give up on me. I went to a psychiatrist and found out that I was a pretty nice person.

Now forward some 25 years.I found out that I have two auto-immune diseases-Lupus and Crohn’s. Lupus can also cause depression along with much pain, but do you know what? This time it ’s ALL in God’s hands. He carried me through before, so I know He is there for me now.

Reach out to your fellows church members (your extended family who loves you) Don’t be afraid to tell them what is going on. Let them help you with chores you feel too tired to handle.

Only God knows if Christians who commit suicide will go to heaven, but remember, God put each one of us on earth for a purpose. Give yourself time to fulfill yours.

Thanks for your sharing Anita. I think it’s stories like yours that often help people, because they have the hope that someone who truly has walked in their shoes has found a reason to keep going.
