    Grand Question of the Week

    By John | July 28, 2008

My sister-in-law is heading to the Grand Canyon today as part of her long drive back home from Las Vegas.

Have you been to the Grand Canyon?

Grand Sight or Hole in the Ground?

"Grand Sight" or "Hole in the Ground"?

What did you think?  Was it beautiful, or just a hole in the ground?

If you want an even more grand view, you’ve got to do it from the bottom of the hole looking up. That’s how you really see the canyon.

Joe - I guess everything in life does look better when you’re at the bottom looking up…

I’ve been to the Canyon twice and I still haven’t quite seen what everyone raves about. Maybe it was the hours of driving through the desert trying to get there that put me in a sour mood.

I thought it was pretty impressive. There’s just something about the size and scope of it that took my breath away. We went to the North Rim where it wasn’t all that busy and involved less driving so maybe that helped my perspective out too.
Some people from my church just mentioned a canyon north of Amarillo somewhere that they said was comparable in their mind and one that you could drive to the bottom of and camp inside. Our family might just have to check that out.

We loved the Grand Canyon, the 2nd time we also went to the north side. Then you are also close to Zion & Bryson Nat. parks, we thought these to be more fun as there is so much to hike. Pastor you and Jess would love Palo Duro Canyon, but go in the spring or fall, not during our hot summer.

I love the Canyon.. I remember camping at the bottom with the beautiful view of Comet Hyakutake stretching across the sky in ‘96. If you really want an experience, try hiking the Canyon rim-to-rim. I’ve done it twice; my best time was 9 hours. (Though I couldn’t do it now.. too out of shape!)
