iQuestion of the Week
By John | July 21, 2008
I mentioned last Friday that there was a pretty good story for the reason why I missed posting the Friday Fun links on July 11.
Here’s the summary of that story, in visual form:
Here’s the wordy version (with a gratuitous Jesus reference just for fun).
July 11, 2008.
After a restless night of dreaming about an iPhone shortage at Appleton’s AT&T stores, I left the house at 5:15am (yes, am) to go wait in line to purchase an iPhone. The store didn’t open until 8am, so I picked up some Starbucks coffee - Komodo Dragon again - popped the camp chair out of the trunk, picked out a good book and plopped down in front of the AT&T store right outside of the Fox River Mall. I was #11 in line. My chances were good that the store would have at least 11 iPhones to sell. Appleton’s not that ‘country’ (pronounced cuhuunchry). I’ve never done anything as impulsive or consumeristic as this.
FYI: The closest I’ve come was in June of 1992 at my 12th birthday party where, after I had opened enough birthday cards to secure my purchase of the Super Nintendo Game System, I conned my mom into taking me to the Venture department store (see Wikipedia article here) and buying it - and then we returned home to finish out the party.
At exactly 7:01am, the rain came. Steady and deliberate, the downpour separated the fully committed from the fad-seekers. at 7:02 am I proudly hoisted my pink umbrella. Real men really do wear Pink! At 8:42am I walked out of the AT&T store with my 8GB iPhone in hand. It was still raining. People were still waiting. I guess that once you’re soaked, you’re soaked.
At 4:44 pm, my iPhone finally got activated and began working (yes, it took a while). At 4:45 pm, 52% of my life’s dreams came true. Maybe that’s an overstatment. I’m sorry. I have a tendency to exaggerate. On second thought, make that 51% of my accumulated life dreams now fulfilled.
The iPhone is my first Apple purchase. I’ve resisted the iPod thing and the Macbook thing for trendiness issues, but I always said that when one device can be my phone/mp3 player/web surfer/email checker/personal assistant/alarm clock/& babysitter for my 2 year old, that I would invest in that device. Lucky me, they threw in an easy GPS application too.
For all of you who are Apple fans (and judging by the number of people who view this blog using Safari, I’d say there are quite a few of you) and those of you who aren’t, is this whole iPhone thing just a fad, or is it as revolutionary as I think it is…

I converted to Apple just before leaving the Seminary 3 years ago and have no intention of ever going back.
I started with an iPod mini, then picked up an iBook, then a video iPod, then a 17″ iMac, and now do most of my work on a tweeked out 20″ iMac with plans for a Mac Book Air sometime this year.
I too was in line for an iPhone the day it came out, had fewer problems that most getting it working, and am completely in awe of it.
The thing that really blows me away, is that, so far, I’ve largely just been playing with it. As I figure out more and more how to incorporate it into my everyday life, I’m going to wonder how I ever got anything done without it.

My phone dosn’t even take pictures! All I can do is call people. What happens to all of these things next year when the new version comes out? You know being a teen in the fifties was pretty simple. Have fun with your new toy.

Now that you’ve got that shiny new iPhone, be sure to download a few versions of God’s Word to it–I personally use Laridian.com, tho I run Windows Mobile. They do have an iPhone version.

It’s a great device, but do we really need it? I mean just ask your wife!
