Would Jesus Digg it?- 1- A new series

I’d like to start a new series in the blog. One of the things the internet does well is grabbing what’s current, what’s new, and bringing it front and center for people to look at and evaluate. One of the most frequented areas is pop culture.
I like reading about pop culture and given the nice analysis John did previous in his series on the book, Pop Goes the Church, I think it would be interesting to look at some pop culture phenomenon as they become big. Books, movies, music, websites, etc, and then to look at the good, bad, and ugly.
One of the websites that I’ve just started looking at a little is called Digg and it fits this series launch perfectly. Why? Because the whole point of Digg is for users to vote (or ”digg”, thus the name for the site) for stories, videos, etc that they think are interesting, trendy, etc. Items can also be buried, disputed, commented on, etc.
I like Digg. It brings together so many stories in one place. It saves me a lot of surfing and it covers topics beyond just entertainment. Also, it gives you some nice insight into what’s really on people’s radars as you look at what people have been “digging” over the last day, week, month, and year. As we’ve discussed on this site before, we need to be able to understand and speak in the words and metaphors of our culture. Digg gives you instant access to many of those. And as I said, it’s not a bad steward of time either as it brings so much together in one space.
Are there any negatives? As with many sites, what’s most popular and pushed to the front can be the things that get a little edgy or even go beyond, things that are negative, attempting to offend, titillate, etc. So on that end, be a little careful what you click on.
Questions for the week- are there any things you’d like to see us discuss in this forum- Would Jesus Digg it? Also, do you think Jesus would digg “Digg”?

Who am I kidding…I just like to spell dig with an extra ‘g’. It makes me feel ‘relevantt’.
