    Saturday Thoughts on Community

    By Dan | September 6, 2008

Today I was able to talk a little about community with our elders.  This was especially appropriate as Messiah is starting a series on community, one many of you have probably heard of, “40 Days of Community”.

My focus this morning was on Psalm 133, one of the psalms of ascent and the idea of every Christian as part of the Church.  This is intriguing becuase especially today, we hear so many people identify themselves as Christians or believers but who distance themselves from actual membership or attendance at churches.  They’d prefer just to be individual Christians.

Impossible.  No, they can’t do it.  You see, once you’re part of the family, you’re in.  If you believe in Jesus, you’re part of his family and while you can move away from home, occasionally come home for holidays, and even make fun of your family, but as long as you’re still a believer, you’re still part of the family.

Now we all want our families to grow closer together, so we should want the same thing for our church families as well.  We don’t want to leave those people at the edge.  The good news is that we don’t have to just leave them there.  We can keep reaching out, building relationships, and hopefully showing them through our own examples that the family is worth the effort.  In fact, as you’ve probably experienced, family generally gives back more than you give it.

Let’s take this attitude to our churches tomorrow.
