This is a bit of a takeoff of the sermon I’m preaching tonight for the Thanksgiving Eve service, so if you’re coming, this might act as a bit of a spoiler, but feel free to read anyway.
I really appreciated the Thanksgiving service we did with our youth last Sunday night. We actually did a stations worship based on the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles (also Called Feast of Booths, etc). It was neat to learn about this feast and discuss its Christian connections and also how it connects to our own holiday of Thanksgiving.
At one of the stations, the kids were asked to go up to a grafitti board and write things for which they were thankful. As I was looking through them later on, I was moved by some- “the compassion on my parents”, that’s pretty good for a teenager. “Freedom of Religion”. I second that. But there were also some that were a little more mundane- “air”, and some that were kind of silly- “Capture the Penguin game”.
Do we thank God for Capture the Penguin too? I’m still not sure what happens in this game, but I’m assuming it’s one of those little timewasters you can find all over online. As I was preparing for my sermon though, it made me think how much we need to thank God for all aspects of our life, from things that really move us deeply, all the way down to the little stress reliefs that keep us going. For both the spiritual and the silly.
So as you reflect this Thanksgiving, what are you most thankful for?
