You’ve probably googled your name before. It’s interesting to see what a person would learn about us if they went to the web.
Have you googled “Jesus” before?
I must say, it’s interesting to see what comes up. It starts with a Wikipedia entry. That’s ok. It’s very encyclopediaesque which means it tries to present facts and all the alternative opinions. Not with my biases, but not bad stuff. Then it goes to Campus Crusade and a discussion of how one comes into relationship with Jesus. Great!
Then, however, you start hitting stuff like “Dress-up Jesus”, which is a program where you put different outfits on Jesus, including ones from the Wizard of Oz, Satan outfits, and BDSM outfits as well. Not so nice.
After this point, we have good and bad mixed together. Perhaps the most unfortunate is that when one looks to the side there are the big sponsored links. What are they? First comes the Mormons, then come a couple of other websites that are almost as confusing.
It’s sad that if a person is honestly questing for Jesus there’s so much muck they have to search through. So many people are competing to show him to be less than he is, to paint him as silly, or to make him some kind of mean judge or semi-mythological figure.
So what are we to do? I guess it means that on the web or in our daily lives, we need to be clear communicators of Jesus. If there’s so much junk out there we need to clearly communicating that Jesus is the loving son of God. He has transformed our lives and he wants to do that for all others as well. Every ounce of us needs to speak that good news. Not an easy calling, but if I’d want my name to be held in the right light, I definitely want Jesus’ to be honored as well.

Google is Anti-Catholic. They own Youtube too.
Whenever there are protests about Youtube videos being offensive, they are typically removed after a few complaints and flaggings by Youtube patrons. When the Eucharist was desecrated, tens of thousands of flags and messages were ignored.
Google is in the pocket of the Prince of this world as are the vast majority of the propaganda industry…oops I mean media, the world enslavement organization…oops I mean the UN, and the Murder industry…oops I mean medical industry.
Google works against God for Satan, which is totally normal for large corporations these days.
Revelation 13:7
It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him.
Revelation 12:12
… the Devil has come down to you, filled with rage, knowing that his time is short!
One of the problems may also be that though there are good representations of Christianity online (http://www.iamsecond.com/ and http://www.notreligion.com/) those sites are going about spreading their message without talking about Jesus upfront – which affects web searches and the like. Their radio spots and billboards are simple, but require the end user to go directly to their site, you probably wouldn’t just stumble upon them. Also, google ad words can be pricey – so you end up with the bigger, national organizations getting the sponsored placements. Shouldn’t some of our local churches come up in those searches? It’d be nice – but I don’t think we can expect non-believers to come to our churches based on marketing – it is only through personal relationships that we can truly share what it means to follow Jesus.
Thanks, Dan…that made me think.
I’m glad we’re focusing on “marketing” Jesus through our own lives. As much as I’m into putting Jesus out there however possible and taking down barriers, I agree that the only way we can truly introduce Jesus to people is through his body, the Church. It’s a challenge that gives me a gut check on a daily basis. I guess a good Lutheran would call that drowning the Old Adam and rising daily to the New.
